Under the Gaze

Game Designer

Team: solo

Duration: 8 weeks

Overview

Under the Gaze is a third-person stealth-action prototype focused on player decision-making under constant surveillance.

I designed the core gameplay loop, stealth and detection systems, and a multi-route level that encourages different playstyles and risk-reward decisions.

The project was iterated based on playtesting, improving mission clarity and player guidance.

Contributions

Core Gameplay and Loop

Designed a multi-phase gameplay loop including preparation, infiltration, encounter, extraction, and upgrade phases.

Structured the experience around tension and release, combining stealth pressure with strategic decision-making.

Stealth & Detection System

Designed stealth and detection systems based on vision cones, light exposure, and sound.

Defined detection rules, enemy behavior, and environmental interactions to create consistent stealth logic.

Level Design

Designed a semi-linear level with multiple routes, verticality, and player-driven approach choices.

Created distinct paths (safe, risky, and high-pressure escape) to support different playstyles and replayability.

Systems: Watcher

Designed the “Watcher” system as a global surveillance mechanic influencing enemy behavior and player movement.

Used it to create constant pressure and shape player decision-making.

Iteration & Playtesting

Conducted playtesting sessions and iterated on level design based on player behavior and feedback.

Identified issues with objective clarity and improved pacing and mission structure through iteration.
